Emulsified oil in 1996 960 900

For some time I've had a mysterious coolant loss. Minimal, as in less than a pint every 6 months. Recently, I've been noticing hints of milky, emulsified oil on the dipstick. Very small quantities. I seriously doubt a head gasket. Engine's never been overheated, and barring that the 2.9 doesn't seem to have any real history of head gasket problems. Two things come to mind. First, it's getting into winter, could be a result of the car's use: it sees lots of in-town, short run driving. Second, the oil cooler: can coolant leak into the oil at the adapter? I will note one thing that preceeded this condition but likely has no connection, namely, I was a quart low on oil a few months back, added a quart of standard dino oil (I've always run semi-synthetic). At the last oil change, grunge on the dip stick, changed oil, everything looked clean, but a check this weekend showed small traces of emulsified oil.
Thanks in advance for any opinions.
Richard
