on, off and flicker 700

Had another problem today that I was finally able to nail down. From the FAQs it appeared my alternator brushes were going. Turns out the insulation on the three light gauge wires on the alt had bad insulation and were shorting together. I cut out the bad and patched some new and all seems well so far. So this brings me to some questions and the one real weak point in my car- the Lucas wiring. I think the deteriorating stuff is natural rubber. Where it's protect under sleeving it's still supple and in good shape. Does only the exposed wire go bad? I hope so because then I can just fix it piece meal when individual wires go bad. A thourogh inspection is warrented, I know. Or should the entire engine wire harness assembly be replaced? Is that available and where?
