240 transmission dying? 200 1992

My 1992 240 with 150,000 miles doesn't shift out of first when cold in the morning. When warm it is OK, except it doesn't always go back to first (takes off the line in second). A supposedly reliable transmission shop didn't want to do the governor service ($225) because they said there are probably other problems since it takes several miles in the AM for it to finally shift. So they want $529 for initial labor then up to another $2300 in parts and labor depending upon what they find. I can't bring myself to agree to an unknown amount up to $2800 to rebuild, so I asked them to button it up and give it back.

Suggestions? Drive it till it quits? Any cheaper suggestions? Perhaps pay the $$ since I can't get another car for that price?
