How do you snug the 245 tailgate latch ? 200

I searched the archives but didn't find any ideas I could use regarding snugging down the tailgate on my 88 245. Since there are so many really clever Bricksters perhaps someone has come up with a new fix? Problem: There is 1/4"-3/8" play where the latch meets the striker when the tailgate is closed. Hinges are fine. I adjusted the striker which helped take a little play out. Rubber seal is sound, perhaps a little flat. Used silicone on that. There appears to be a black plastic piece on the striker where the latch grabs that has worn through. I tried a piece of rubber hose but that didn't last. Is the latch, the piece on the tailgate, adjustable with those 4 bolts? Is it advisable to file out the notch on the striker where the 2 bolts are to get additional travel/ make it tighter? Love to learn what others have done.
