Should WD40 ever be used in a distributor? 700 1989

A month or so back the shop I deal with put me in a used distributor. I noted back then when he was checking out the used distributor before he put it in - he cleaned the inside with WD40.

Well - it quit running a few days back - and after I checked grounds and all I could find - I got it back there. They pulled the distributor and implied that some oil had got past the seal in the form of a film (not dripping anywhere)and had got on the pickup - thereby caused the distributor not to work. When they cleaned it - she fired off.

Any comments?
