Neutral Safety Switch question 200

This applies only to 242 and 244, not 245 (how many doors on yours? 245=wagon)

The circuit for reverse lights after leaving the NSS switch goes through a connector and thence to the left rear tail light connector. (It does not go throught the BFWS, so there is no need to replace bulbs with matched sets.)

The first connector is one of several found above the driver's left toe. It is the 9-pin type, with the wire in question in terminal position #9. Black wire in and out.

So that one can identify the connector more accurately, the other wires are:

#1 Green........Fuel level transmitter
#2 Red-yellow...Fuel pump
#3 Green........Left turn signal
#4 Blue.........Right turn signal
#5 White........Rear fog lights
#6 yellow.......Brake light
#7 yellow.......Brake light
#8 Blue-red.....Tail gate washer (245 only)
#9 Black........Both reverse lights

At the left tail light there is a connector which connects wires to the left circuit board. Inside the connector (can be opened up) for each wire is a little pincer thing that grips a copper tab of the circuit board.

For the reverse lights (and fog lights) the connector has two adjoining wires of the same color and the pincers grip a double-wide copper tab. One wire is bringing voltage from the front, the other takes voltage over to the right side lamp.

The copper tab under the pincer from the front gets burnt and/or oxidized and fails to make good connection. Note that this can happen on ALL of the pincers.

For the reversing and fog lights there is a patch-fix. Swap the pincer things inside the connector housing. That puts the wire from the front on a relatively good copper tab, the and wire-to-the-right pincer on the burnt spot. You may get only a left side reverse (or fog) light, but it will give you some visibility.

Been there, done that. BTDT. It works. I had voltage at the connector and no fog or back-up lights. Swapped, and got left side lights to work.

Good Luck and Wlecome,

Bob
