stock B16 performance question 444-544 1961

The idea of keeping my 544 stock and original is appealing to me more as I take things apart to find perfectly good components. The brake drums are in excellent shape, and I'm starting to believe the 73,000 miles on the speedo. What kind of performance should I expect if I decide to use the B16. Other than the dual carbs and porting the exhaust are there any low cost upgrades that would improve power? I,m guessing that a cam might not do much in such a small engine. The only thing I,ve driven with a 4 popper (besides my Scout 800) was a Morris Minor with the 948.Should I get used to heading for the breakdown lane on hills again? I,m old enough to remember 544s on the road but have no recolection of what their capabilities were. Thanks
