The large, braided earth strap between the transmission housing and frame was covered in oil and sludge, due, I believe, to a leaking rear main seal.

I pulled that off and cleaned it, as I will also do at its mounting points.

I don't know why you asked about premature wear of the clutch cables?

This car only gave me 20 miles of driving upon my trip home from buying it. the master cylinder failed, leaving me coasting throought the tool booth at the Valley Forge entrance of the Pennsylvania Turnpike.
