A 544 with a stock B16B (twin H4 SU carbs etc) is the model that made Volvo's reputation for performance. You can review dozens of 444 and 544 road tests, 1947-1965 in Brooklands Books' compilation of reprints. I got my copy recently by online order from www.books4cars.com in Seattle.

Top speed and zero-60 test figures were about the same as for later B18D 544s. Use of 4.56 axle with B16 vs 4.10 with B18, combined with longer duration, higher lift cam in the B16B seems to account for this. The factory spec for B16B cam timing (by intake opening at TDC) is the same as for a B cam as used in early P1800s.

1961 model year 544s and 122S's came with the M40 gearbox that continued for many years. Something was done to mate them with B16 engines that one year.

You won't be crawling up hills with the Morris Minors and annoying truck drivers.
