Damaged threads on strut gland nut 700 1988

I had to remove the strut from the car and use heat plus an air chisel to remove the old gland nut. However, the old nut must have been so rusted to the strut tube threads that it damaged them somehow when it was removed. When I try to put the new gland nut on, it feels like the threads will engage, but then when I try to tighten it they slip on by and the nut comes back off. Does anyone have any tricks to repair these threads?
