Hi all! Ive been looking on the site for some time and wow what a help you have been!! I haven't needed to post anything until now. I have a 1990 740 8 valve that has a knocking/tapping coming from the cam cover around the distributor cap. It gets faster when rpms go up, but is also loud at idle. Whats wierd is this noise was not there before today when I changed out the intake manifold gasket and cam cover gasket. I took the intake manifold off for a second time to see if anything fell into the valves while I was working, nothing there even with a flash light. I took the cam cover off, nothing there. I have not driven it on the road.
I am absolutely baffled. The closest thing I can think of is this was a problem before and is a coincidence that the worst of the problem is occuring the day I decide to change out the gaskets. Im the second owner car has 132,000 miles, seems to have been taken care of, engine ran strong before.
New parts I have put in are AMM sensor, timing belt, water pump, alternator, both fuel pumps, fuel filter, fuel pressure regulator, flame trap. Cleaned out throttle body and adjusted throtte position sensor, took fuel rail off and cleaned out, replaced injector o-rings. Changed motor mounts.
Symtoms I had before are a rough idle that feels like a vibrating message chair at brookstone which happends some times but not always. Its the wierdest thing with this pinging sound. Any ideas?
