preparing for winter? 700 1990

With the first snow of the year here in New York, I figure it's time I ask.

What should I be doing to keep my 740GL up and running in cold winters? This is the first time in the winter that I'll have a car.
I know of the following:
- Change the windshield wiper to 'winter' version.
- get an ice-pick thing to clear the snow from the windshield.

Yes, i know everyone out there is laughing at me - but I'm a 23 year old car newbie who just started working!

Please advise!
