For sale 240 with sludgy M47 200 1987

I stumbled across a beater 240, rusty, wooden bumper, etc sitting in someone's yard. The battery was dead from sitting for 5 months, so we couldn't start it. They let me look at it and the only thing that bothered me was the transmission was very resistant to shift into gear. They said it had been shifting fine, except when the girl drove it 4 miles to where it currently sits, she noticed the sludgy shifting too.

It was sub freezing at the time. About 25 degrees. Does stiffness in the linkage occur normally in cold weather, or is this something to worry about?

Thanks,
Nathan
