Girling front brake pads 700

Dear Brickboarders,

There are two recognised brake pad designs for the Girling twin-piston front calipers, as used on Volvo 700s. They are an identical friction material "puck" moulded on slightly different shoeplates.

They are FMSI 7161-D522 (labelled as DB317 in PBR and Axxis boxes):

I have tried both on my '89 740, and the critical fitment dimensions are identical. The friction face sweeps the same area of rotor; the fitment in the anchor bracket is spot on; the protrusion for the spring-clip is in no danger of interfering with the caliper bridge; and the upper edge of the backplate is clear.

Does anybody know the history of why there are two designs? (If there is no reason not to, it may be possible to drop one part from a catalogue and save a bit of inventory cost).
