240 high whine + hesitates / clanks / surges? 200

My beloved 1983 4-door auto-trans 240 has decided to act up again. So I seek the sage counsel of the board...

SYMPTOMS: (may or not be one problem at root)
(A) Low idle / dies at idle
(B) High whine (bearing whine?), sound alters w. engine rpm
(C) Plugs fouled w. black soot -- changed out, engine runs smoother, but still dies at idle
(D) On gentle accelleration, hesitates, then "clank" or "twang" from under hood, surges forward.


KNOWN ISSUES
(E) Leaks trans fluid. But I have kept levels reasonably high. Figure (D) might be related (?)
(F) Has periodically suffered from (A), but (B) is new in history of car.

DIAGNOSIS?

No idea. Idle control valve (under intake manifold)(how to test simply)? Other? Any ideas?
