horrible gasoline smell - '95 964 900 1995

This morning I got a tremendous gasoline smell in the car on the way to work. Had to open the windows to keep the air breathable. Changed the vent settings on the way home and thought I had it beat (yes, the gas cap is tight).

I put the car in the garage tonight, shut the door -then came back 20 minutes later. The smell of gas about knocked me out !!! No visible drip to the floor under the engine, or anywhere between the tank and the engine. No visible leak anywhere under the hood, but I haven't started pulling anything loose and moving it aside yet. However, nothing is apparent, whether the engine is running or shut off. The smell is definitely stronger under the hood.

I really have no idea where to start - but this smell is like I have an open gas can in the garage, it's that pungent.

Car starts and runs fine. Absolutely no difference in operation.

Any ideas ????
