High NOx... failed AirCare 200

I recently found that I'd failed AirCare here in BC due to high NOx levels. The HC and CO levels were fine and well within expected parameters but the NOx was not. In the AirCare guide it says it may be the O2 sensor, but it says that for HC and CO as well, so I assume if this were the case, these would be out of whack too. One thing it did mention, as did a mechanic friend, was engine build up, probably carbon. The guy who owned the car prior to me took it and failed and his mechanic buddy told him to give the car to him and he'd get it to pass. What he did, I don't know, but my buddy who sold me the car told me he added gas treatment as he found an empty bottle of it on the floor when the mechanic gave him the car back.
