86 Volvo 240 ~ screetching whining driveshaft~ Info needed...HELP 200

My car sounds like a 747 landing and an electric motor going bad.
I put the car on the lift and checked the trans mount thats ok.
I turned the driveshaft by and and got a small amount of play.
What is the thing called between the transmission and the first
driveshaft? It looks simular in shape as a water pump.
Would such little play on the driveshaft make that much noise?
