how do i know if i need a mass air flow 200

I have a 1987 240dl, probably 350K miles..(obo broke)...
running rough..especially when cold. No dash lights are on..
per a "reputable" (i've used him..and several friends) it needs a mass
air flow sensor. He won't put on anything other than bosch says
rebuilts are junk.
1. how do i know its true (that it needs one..and that a brand new
bosch (sp??) is necessary. says 400.00 bucks is what it will cost..
the whole car isn't worth alot more than that! If i don't put it on..can engine damage occur? Thanks!!!!
Marty
