very stiff clutch pedal..... 200

Before my brother gave my parent's back their '81 245, he replaced the clutch cable(after having it break). Ever since, and even before, the clutch has been very stiff. So much, that at times it is near impossible to force the pedal to the floor. My VW mechanic took a look at it, and after playing around with the cable for a while, reinstalled it, and for a while(approximately a week or two) the clutch was less stiff. A few weeks later, the stiffness came back. I am taking the car to the shop tomorrow to deal with the oil leak, and was hoping to have some insight to share with my mechanic in regards to the clutch. I know that when the new clutch cable was installed, that it was an oem part. My question is, would I be better off getting a genuine Volvo cable? Thanks :)
