Speedometer issues.....using the RPM meter to gauge road speed. 700 1986

Hola:
The speedometer on my 86 745 works sometimes and others just sits at 'zero'. I've an ADO (German) cluster as OEM. Installing a Yazaki (Japanese) from a later year, allows the Yaz speedo to work, but the fuel gauge and the indicator (idiot) lights don't work.
After reading the RPR catalog many times, I've discovered that the 86 740 had a fuel sending unit that was used only for that year.
If I replaced the sending unit with a later model (to match the Yaz cluster), do you think the fuel gauge would read out?
It sucks to have to rely on the RPM meter to estimate road speed.
Texas highway patrol are not forgiving (ask me how I know).
Gracias,
el raidman
