Rattle coming from transmission 200 1989

My 89 240dl has recently acquired a loud rattling sound which sounds like it must be coming from the transmission, near the bellhousing. When the car is in park it only makes a few clicks every once in a while but when I put the car in drive or reverse it rattles up a storm. I am assuming it's probably a loose flywheel but it's difficult to tell for sure. The transmission shifts fine and everything it's just noisy as all get-out. Anyone else out there have a similar problem? Would someone have to lie to me to tell me I don't have to pull the tranny out to get it fixed? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
