ESR selection buttons

I recently purchased a 92 960 wagon. Low kms, (158) and very good condition. One area of concern---- Occassionally, when starting out in the car, the E button is in use. During the drive, the W button lights up, (no arrow on the dash to indicate that the selection is in winter mode. At some point the light will go back to the E button, and may even move back and forth several times.
Is this a transmission problem or an electrical glitch.
If anyone has experienced this, I would appreciate knowing the answer.
