Backfiring/no power 140-160 1973

Brought the beast back to life today after a tune-up.

Here's the situation:

New points, plugs, rotor and cap. Dwell at 60 degrees. Timed to about 20 BTDC. Adjusted the valves and they're all in spec, between .16-.18 mm.

The car was converted from FI at some point and has dual SUs. The idle is way lumpy and it backfires under load -- shifting from first to second, for instance.

My first thought is double check the timing. But the car was backfiring when cold even before the tune-up (which is why I did the tune-up in the first place).

What else should I check out after the timing?
