My first guess, and it is with fingers crossed, would be a bad valve.

IIRC this car only has around 80,000 right? Hopefully the bottom end still has life left in it.

Been in your position once and ditched the whole engine only to find that it was just a valve. Live and learn.
Not sure how to test without pulling the head though.

As for driving it, me, I'd drive it until the symptoms get worse. But...I have other cars to use when it finally did go.
