Need tips - replacing lower steering u-joint on 91 240 200 1991

The lower steering u-joint/coupler has been going for some time on my 91 240 sedan. I have the part, and a few questions. Haynes is completely silent on this one. The forums helped a bit.....I know to lock the wheel with the front wheels straight to avoid ruining the airbag spring.

Can you put the part on wrong? Right side up is obvious, but is it possible to orient it to one side or the other, or does it self-align? Any tips on getting the old one off would also be appreciated.

Thanks!

David
