Another volvo bought for $50.00 ( Got some questions about stalling issues ) HELP 200

Its an 89 240, I bought it today for 50.00
The original owner said that the car was
having problems stalling when driving down the road.
I cranked the key and the enigne sounds like its turning
to easy. Like maybe the timing belt is snapped. I didnt check though.
The oil smells like gas and is dilluted. I figure that it will need
a fuel pressure regulator and a new ecu control box. The wire harness
looks good. So the question is what could cause it to stall?
