Hey Jeff

I'd suspect the valve also with the "puff puff puff" sound. Maybe the plug is brown because it just isn't burning properly in that cylinder.

Nothing magical about taking the head off. When you drain the coolant, open the block drain as well. Pull the carbs, then the manifolds, then the valve-train then the head bolts and the head. It's very straightforward.

If possible, hold off on ordering parts until you've stripped it down to see what other things need replacing ie. exhaust studs, gaskets etc.

Have your machine shop (the one doing the head/valve work...you won't be able to do it yourself) let you know what you need valve wise. He may prefer to get the goods himself, I know my guy prefers it that way for warantee reasons and I have not had problems with his choices.
