Seat heater relay 900

Trying to fix the heated seats in my 940. Read the FAQ section for 700/900s. I have the model with a green relay which is clipped under the seat (no seperate thermostat). The seat switch is working. When I flip the switch, the relay clicks on, but clicks off again is several seconds. It will stay off for about 30 sec, click back on, then off again. It will cycle like this forever (whether it is has a load (inline with seat heater)or not. I resoldered the connections on the relay, but to no avail; still does the same thing. When I supply elec directly to the seat heaters, bypassing the switch and the relay, they appear to heat-up ok, although I wouldn't say they actually get hot. Anybody have a suggestion that does not involve me shelling out $125 to the dealer for a new relay? Whats the down side to replacing with a garden variety relay from the auto-parts store?
