I'm still working on a 1984 244 GL. I installed a new (8 gauge)wire from the alternator to the battery, housing it in a black split plastic cover for added protection. The existing wire had been spliced with what looked like enough extra wire to facilitate alternator removal without disengaging the wires from the back of it. I don't know why, it was like that when I got it. I followed the original big red wire as far as I could without disturbing the harness and lost sight of it under the distributor. The only other wire of that size and color I found leads to the starter. Since I disconnected it at the alternator end and capped it, I wanted to do the same at the other end. I disconnected it at the starter and before I wrapped it with electrical tape, I checked it for voltage and got 12.85V. The battery read 13.98V. Was this the correct wire? More importantly was this a wise course of action? Is this wire shorting inside the harness? Is there anything else supposed to be hooked to this wire? Any input will be greatly appreciated.
