Hi all,
My wagon badly needs a front breakjob. The choices are not clear so I hope someone can help me out on these queries:
1. I found out that my brake discs (rotors) are the ones with the wheel hub integrated. Volvo says the integrated disc/hub is still avaiolable and would be the cheapest option, also seems easy to remove/refit. Is there any good reason I should convert to separate disc/hub? If I fit the one-piece rotor/hub, can anyone tell me the torque for the castellated hub nut behind the grease cap, the old one came off only by hand and was held in place by a split pin. I would have thought it should be better torqued than that but I suppose may have worked itself loose over 20 years as I believe the rotors have never been renewed.
2. I am thinking to renew the front calipers and brackets/retainers, because of damage, corrosion and problems with the pistons. I have girling brakepads and calipers (2-piston). However, the volvo dealer tells me that there are two options for the caliper/ brackets, and the only way to know which is right for my car is to get the chassis code for the brakes (3- digit) which is usually found on the service plate on the door pillar, in the engine room, or in the boot (trunk). I cannot find the service plate on my car, I suspect it has fallen off. I believe the new calipers are altered from the original. I can get the correct caliper for which there is only one option, but two options for the bracket. Without the code I cannot get the correct bracket (two options) unless I buy both of them and discard one (expensive and non-returnable item). Can anyone help me to identify my caliper/ bracket. This is on the basis of using the one-piece rotor/hub.
My car is not driveable until I can fix the brakes, so any help on this problem is very much appreciated.
Merry Christmas to all of you,
