Short or bad alternator? 700

I have an 88 740T wagon that I think may have a short of some kind in the dash. I've never owned a 740 before, or any car this new for the matter, so I want to make sure that this isn't normal "dying alternator" behavior.
Periodically the voltage gauge will drop all the way over to the left and the dash lights will dim. Some or all of the warning lights will flicker off and on.
This seems to happen most frequently after turning or hitting the brakes (causing the car to dip downward). Sometimes it goes away after braking or turning, and sometimes it just happens on it's own.
Thanks in advance for your help.
