My advice to my Mom when she was looking for a new car was to buy an Accord. She's not going to work on the car, and she keeps 'em 5 years and trades 'em. No car could be better for that type of duty than Honda or Toyota. There's even a guy I know with over 300K miles on a '92 Accord. They're fantastic cars.
But, there's something priceless about a vehicle with a simple drivetrain, tractor-like durability, relatively inexpensive parts (in the aftermarket, anyway), and a stellar safety reputation. There just aren't that many cars on the road that I would BUY with over 200K miles on them.
As I said in my post praising them yesterday, there were times I wanted to push them off a cliff. But that's where the Brickboard comes in. I'll bet that there are people frequenting this site who have saved well in excess of $10,000 in repair costs simply by owning and maintaining their Volvos with the help of this site.
Volvos aren't for everybody, and there have been some lemons. That's for sure. But after owning 4 Hondas, I've now had 5 Volvos, and don't plan to go back unless the B230s get too scarce to find.
Long live the RWD Volvos.
