car cuts off at idle 700 1985

I have a 85 740 and it is cutting off at idle. When I first crank it up and it is cold outside, it idles at 1200 rpm and then when it warms up it will not stay cranked. Has anyone ever had this problem before. When driving as long as I have one foot on the acelarator it will stay cranked. So, I believe it has something to with the idle, can it be adjusted or what. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
