Until about 2.5 years ago, my only cars had ever been 740 wagons (and I used to post here pretty regularly). I strayed into the world of newer VWs, and while I've been happy with them overall, I've had a recent change in living situation and have decided that I'm carrying way, way too much short term debt.
So I'm thinking of selling my 2004 VW Golf TDI and picking up a 1992-1995 740 or 940 turbo wagon to be my daily driver instead.
Now, I know that my fuel economy will be cut in half, but when I bought the TDI I was commuting 75 miles a day, and now I do 10 (20 if I drive home for lunch), so I'm okay with that. I do take road trips into the Rocky Mountains, but I'm comfortable with driving an older car as long as I take care of it and keep my AAA membership current ;)
And I know that an older car will need more TLC, but I know these cars and their quirks, am comfortable doing basic to intermediate work on them myself (especially with the wonderful resources on this board), and know a good Volvo mechanic for the heavy stuff. Besides, given my new living situation, I need a hobby.
So what do you all say? Is this a sensible financial decision, an early mid-life crisis, or a silly idea I should just walk away from?
Thanks for any and all feedback!
Jeff
