crankshaft pulley bolt/nut removal 700 1991

For the second time ,Im ready to renew the timing belt and have read the FAQs regarding the procedure. The first time I did this I used an air impact tool to remove and secure the crankshaft pulley bolt (24mm). Now I am seeing that there is a special tool to hold the pulley in place while loosening and tightening that bolt. How many of you have actually used an air tool versus the " special tool"?. It seems the air tool is a no/no as there could be damage to the key and I understand it is very expensive. What have you done?
