loud click when releasing brake pedal 200

Posted this on the 940 forum but only got 1 response, so I thought I'd challenge the knowledge of the 240 brickboarders.

Starting a few days ago, Every time I release the brake pedal on my 95 940 turbo I hear an audible click by the auto trans shifter. If you put your hand on the base of the shift shaft you can feel the click (neutral safety switch, I presume). This happens in all gears except park. Any ideas of the cause? Is something warning me it is getting ready to fail or wear out? Appreciate any responses.
