Headlights acting strangly 200 1987

A couple of days a go I drove 12 hours, and I used my headlights the entire time. Sometime during this time they started acting funny. At what I thought were random times, the headlights and the gauge lights would dim for a short time, and then come back to normal. The highbeams also did a strange dim when I turned them on but then went to normal again. At one point i went to turn the lights back on and they went completely out. I quickly flipped the switch and got them back on again thankfully. I have also noticed some consisentency on this dimming right when i turn the headlights on, they will turn on dim and then go to normal after a second. Anyway, i was wondering what i should check first. does this sound like it could be the switch, or maybe the relay? or something else.
