Charging Problems From Bad to Worse 200

After replacing my alternator with a rebuilt one, I continued to have intermittent charging problems. Sometimes I got nearly 14V. Sometime the alternator would not hold 12V when I put the lights on. I decided to reroute the little red wire along the fender as some suggested. I sliced the sheeth around the wiring harness and spliced a new red wire about 2 inches down from the grey multiwire connector. Now I've got no battery charge indicator light and no output from alternator. When I check the voltage at either the wire and terminal for the red wire, I get about 2 tenths of a volt less than voltage at the battery. Any suggestions.
