Help! Exhaust questions... 200 1989

I recently purchased a muffler kit from the dealer (no cat) and carved out this afternoon in our schedules to stay home and do it. I took the mufflers down this morning (and some other work I'm doing on the front end -bushings), and then drove to the local dealership to pick up the muffler kit. Everything looks good except for the fact that the new mufflers and pipes are obviously designed to go above the axle. The old muffler #1 used to exhaust straight out behind it, but the new one has an immediate upward elbow at its back end; this connects to the pipe which goes above the axle to get to the muffler #2. The old system went below the axle. Is this correct? Is this a redesign that somehow has escaped my awareness? Or did I get the wrong kit, like maybe the kit for the wagon or something? The part number on the box is 273989 AL.

Many thanks for any information.
