740 won't start 700

Ok, so I have a problem...too many Volvo's parked at the house. Can't have all as the daily driver, so it's sometimes a couple of weeks that one of the old cars is parked.

My '87 740 was parked a couple of weeks while I was on a business trip. It was parked outside and the New England cold winter started. I figured I might have to jump off the battery, but I didn't expect that the normally reliable car wouldn't start. To my surprise it cranked nice and strong, but wouldn't turn over. It sputtered a few seconds, but that was about all. More cranking would almost get it started, but never fully.

I smelled a bit of gas, so obviously it was flooded. No time to troubleshoot, so left it for a couple of days and tried again---same story.

I pulled the plugs and they looked clean, but were wet. Obviously fuel was not the issue, and since it would almost turn over there was some spark, too. It has had a new distributor/rotor ~5000 miles ago, (no new wires). Any ideas on what I should look at??
