Odometer stepper motor - How can I test? 200 1988

Last week I posted that my odo gears seemed ok but of course no odometer action. A reply suggested that the stepper motor could be bad. QUESTION: There is a shaft from the stepper motor to the large gear cluser. Is that shaft supposed to be glued to the large gear? Mine just slides into the hole and comes off the large gear freely. QUESTION: How do you test the motor - is it possible while it is still attached [by two short wires] to the circuit board to test the motor? And thanks to all who offered input last week.
