1979 Volvo 264GL.. 200 1979

Ok,

I own a 1979 Volvo 264GL with an Automatic and yes, it has a Volvo 4 cylinder of some particular year and type, probably a B21, and yes, I'd love to find out which year and model it is. It's supposed to have a Volvo V6 in it. A lovely car which deserves to be ressurected. I can post the engine, manifold and head numbers when I am able to locate them. I can also post the VIN and other #'s for reference too.

Anyhow, I'm no expert in Volvo's, although I'm learning more new things every day about it just by replacing little things on it. Really, I'd love to learn all I can about this lil gem.

Alreay done: Replaced ALL the fuses, front turn signal and parking lamp bulbs, cleaned up the corroded and dirty Bosch Lamda relay Part #0 332 015 001, in the engine compartment, added a bottle of 3M Fuel system cleaner, Replaced the bulbs in the rear tail light housings, and purchased a Volvo part # 1372041 lamp socket for the rear. Again, hoping I did a good deed by that.

My car was missing the original fuse panel cover, so I lacked the knowledge to replace the fuses in the right places, but luckily a user in another forum happened to know where there was a reference online. So, I removed and replaced all of them with brand new fuses according to that. Hoping that did a good deed, I went on. Apparently they are in the same places they are in on the 1979 240's.

My other concern is that someone has messed up the tail lamps, rear turn signals, reverse lamps, etc and switched them all around to different places. There are two different bulb holders and from what I see, two different bulbs. #67 and #1156. I have the nice 6 section rear tail lights, too. The R. tail light housing has a broken section of trace on the green circuit board. This side doesn't work at all, except for a barely visible flashing when the R. turn signal is on. The L. side signal works beautifully, as does the L. Brake lamps. On the left housing, the bottom center section just has a bare round hole there. Neither of the two different bulb holders fit it either. So, I'd dearly love to know which bulbs go in which sockets and then where do they go in the lens housing.

This car aparently has a number of electrical gremlins, aparently from haphazard repairs along it's 26 year life. Have no idea where the original V6 engine went to. Although, I'd like to know why they took it out.

There are two rocker switches on the parking / hand brake lever console. These are supposed to be for the heated seats. The white printing on them has worn off but I can barely make out the word "WINDOW", so I am assuming these are actually for the rear window lifts which for the life of me I can't find out how to operate. These are both inoperative, and actually I think the R. swith is physically broken because it doesn't even move. On the rear of the console here is a small red sign which I think is supposed to be illuminated "Fasten Seat Belts". Also, note here is two little switches on the front which operate the power mirrors. The right one works, but the left one does not.

Additionally, I, for the life of me, can't get the car to go over 25 MP/h, much less beyond ~1,750 RPM. It idles badly, mostly between 500 & 1000 RPM sometimes lower, and I have to keep my foot on the throttle/accellerator/gas pedal in order to keep it from totally dying. It gets a little better when it is warming up though. People have suggested me through another Volvo forum that the Air Mass Meter is suspect, as the local dealer has too, as well as the RPM sensor, O2 (Lambda Sonde) sensor, and a few other items. Though, cleaning up that relay, connected to a connector near the battery, (I dunked it in CLR and scrubbed it with a light brass wire brush), sorta has seemed to help a bit. I will eventually replace this relay with a brand new one.

When I opened the Power Steering reservoir, it was noticably empty, so I bought a bottle of the best looking stuff I could find and filled it too.

My other thoughts were to replace a number of the relays, sensors, and clean the flame trap. The fuel filter looks new. The spark plug wires are not the same brand.

So, here I am.. any suggestions, thoughts, etc. are welcome.
