Hot fuel pump relay 700 1990

My "newest" 740 (1990 744 GL, Rex-Regina) wouldn't restart earlier tonight when it was well warmed up. I tried a bunch of obvious things like swapping the radio suppression and AC relays while my wife went back in the mall for more shopping. Finally it restarted after I had tried a lot of little things. One of which was putting in the spare (1990 date on it) fuel pump relay that came in the glove box of the car. That one was clearly bad because it did not even click when the key was turned on. I put the one I had started with (2002 dated) back, then started checking fuses, which all looked ok. After that, the car started right up and ran all fine all the way home.

So the wife back in the mall cost me more than the fix so far.

But I left the fuse-relay area open and felt the FPR as I drove along. It was hot. Not quite too hot too touch, but not just warm either. Does anyone know if this is normal, or if it clues me that my "good" FPR has bad connections inside.
