Bought my first brick a few months ago and while I have like the car very much my enjoyment of it has been severely dampened by its horrendous gas mileage. I had been expecting low 20's on average and mid to high 20's on the highway which is pretty much what everyone on the Volvo boards report. I have been getting 13-15!
I recently did an all highway run and got a whopping 17mpg.
Vehicle info:
89 740T Wagon, 178K, AW-71
Things done to it since I got it:
1-complete tune-up, plugs, wires, filters, etc-timing set at 12btc
2-changed all fluids
3-replaced the ect-I thought this was the problem. The one in the car was black and the correct one is blue but nothing changed.
4-replaced O2 sensor
Brakes are not binding and car is going into OD, revving at about 2500 at 65mph and the AMM has not been tampered with.
Car runs fine. Smooth power, pulls hard, no smoking, plugs look fine, no strange gauge readings, etc. Other than occasional long cranking time you wouldn't think anything was wrong. This has really put a damper on my use and enjoyment of the car. Getting less than 200 miles a tank I find myself obsessed with constantly watching the gas gauge drop. My next step is to check fuel pressure. I disconnectted the fpr and playing with the vacuum changes engine operation so it looks like it is working. Will probably replace it anyway since its probably the original. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
