High NOx / failed emmissions / vacuum leak 200 1989

Hi y'all bricksters:

I sort of did this whole thing backwards so I might have just blown $50 on a smog test. I've noticed that there was a hissing sound (behind center console) upon acceleration and engine shutoff. With the help of Brickboard, I was directed to the vacuum check valve on top of the intake manifold. Got a working check valve for a buck at the junkyard and hissing sound went away.

However, before I did this I took my brick for a smog check and failed. Hydrocarbon and CO levels were well below maximum allowed (even below average) but NOx levels were off the charts. Before I take her back for a re-smog, it is likely that the vacuum leak was the cause of my emmissions test failure?

The shop guy told me to check my EGR and cat, but if a cat fails wouldn't everything be high?
