gear knob removal 900 1995

Hi everybody!
First time for me in the BBoard.
On a '95 964 US version I am having a hard time removing the shift gear knob or handle. So far I got two stories: its breaks and you have to replace it ($75.) and you have to pull real hard and it will come out. Don't want to do anything b-4 I hear some input from you guys. Not doing this for fun thecar will not start and 'am suspecting the gear shift bypass bar is stuck in there not letting the shifting mechanism "read" Park or Neutral. New Batt. and starter works. Any ideas, help!
thanks,
Ifokany
