740 droning noise in cabin between 2500 and 3500rpm 700 1987

Has any one experienced a droning noise in the cabin when engine is at 2500 to 3500 rpm? Can feel vibration from engine atvsame revs when bonnet(hood) is open. All else is fine. Just this annoying noise at exactly the speed I like to tracell at.
Any solutions out there? I am thinking maybe the engine mounts have hardened with time. Does anyone know what purpose the cast metal plate (approx. 6 inches by 4 inches 5/8 inch thick) serves? It is bolted to the firewall.
Thanks from down under.
