Gas Gauge flicker and Gas Mileage 700

I have an 86 740T automatic, 192K. Two issues: FIRST, lately I've noticed that the gas gauge needle flickers when I am sitting at a light (it may flicker when I'm driving also, but not so noticeably that it would be a distraction that would cause me to look). It happens very quickly, not even a second I'd imagine, although it seems to be happening with more frequency (which could be that really I am just looking at the needle more often when I am at a light or stopped). Is it prelude to something taking place with my fuel pump, or a lose connection? I also have the common dim lights/smack the dashboard cure on the right side of my instrument panel, but it's not even an annoyance since I now expect to whack the dash top over the instrument panel when I begin to drive at night. SECOND is about accurate gas mileage computing. I get approximately 160 miles from full to the half-full position. However the remaining half-tank seems to disappear a lot quicker than the first half. This morning, I left home with half a tank of gas showing on the gauge, I drove 50 miles and the gauge was just at the beginning of the red block. Is there THAT much more gas left in the tank (enough to do 110 miles) or is there something I'm not aware of in the way the engineers designed this reading? I've thought on occasion to just drive it until it runs completely out of gas (carrying a reserve of course) just to see, but am not to keen on clogging up the fuel system with whatever is in the bottom of my 19 year old gas tank.
