Brake pedal is solid without the motor running, but sinks ... 200 1984

.. when I turn the engine on. Is this a symptom of a failing master cylinder? No visible leakage, but maybe the fluid is going into the brake booster.

The brake warning light has come on once or twice so something's funky. It generally stays out, and the brakes work.

I don't like to mess with brake hydraulics. My mechanic said to keep an eye on the reservoir and bring it in Tuesday. Am I tempting fate?
